Why I tested these two
Selene's Kitty Fountain was the first one I looked at properly. It shows 4.7 stars from "100,000+" reviews (Selene's own figure), and it comes with a 5-year warranty and a 365-day refund, which is a long time to change your mind about a water bowl. Mabel is 12, and at her last checkup the vet asked how much she drinks. I couldn't say. A fountain I had to keep topping up seemed a fair way to start finding out.
Selene's size guide puts the 4L down for larger cats or multi-cat homes, and the Kitty Fountain comes no bigger. Mabel and Moss share their water, so I wanted a larger fountain in the test as well. That was FreshFlow by Rhykin: TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration, a medical-grade 304 stainless steel bowl that goes in the dishwasher, and a 3.2L for one cat or a 7L for homes with several. It's also #1 Vet Recommended.
For 45 days the FreshFlow 7L Wired lived in the kitchen and the Selene 4L in the hallway, then they traded places for the next 45. Each cordless option got two weeks: the FreshFlow 7L Wireless, and the Selene on battery at the end. I wrote down every refill and filter change.
The spec sheet: FreshFlow vs Selene

A green cell is the stronger entry in that row. No green means I called it level.
Filtration and water quality
Mabel sheds all year, and that long coat ends up everywhere, water bowls included. Most mornings I looked for fur in both, and I changed each filter on its maker's schedule.
- TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration is the most advanced filtration system on the market, and through Mabel's heaviest shedding weeks the 7L bowl stayed clear of loose fur
- Its multi-stage carbon-ion media traps fur, debris, odor and impurities before the water reaches the bowl
- A fresh TripleGuard™ filter is delivered every 28 days, so you never run on a tired filter
- I filled it from the kitchen tap. Rhykin says filtered water is only worth it where your tap water is very hard
- Before each filter change I ran a fingertip around the medical-grade 304 steel bowl, and it never felt slimy
- Mabel's fur never slowed the flow between filter changes
- Selene says its layers catch fur and debris, remove odors, cut heavy metals and add oxygen
- The count changes from page to page. Headlines say "triple filtration" and the FAQ says "4-layer mineral filtration"
- The FAQ says change it once a month, every 30 days. A different answer in the same FAQ says every 2 to 4 weeks
- It's a standard mineral filter, with no published lab results on what it actually removes
- Its water stayed reasonably clear on the mornings I checked
- Selene's packs assume two filters a month, so with two cats I changed it every two weeks
FreshFlow takes the filtration round. TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration is the most advanced filtration system on the market, and in my house it kept the 7L clear of Mabel's fur through her worst shedding weeks, with a fresh filter delivered every 28 days. Selene's standard mineral filter does a reasonable job, but its own pages can't settle on a count ("triple filtration" in the headlines, "4-layer" in the FAQ) or on how often to change it. With two cats I changed Selene's every two weeks. If filtration is what you care about most, FreshFlow is the one to buy.
Build quality and materials
Both are steel fountains that go in the dishwasher, so for my house it came down to the steel, the motor and the size. The Kitty Fountain's largest size is the 4L, which Selene's guide suggests for larger cats or multi-cat homes. Rhykin's answer for a multi-cat house is the 7L, and that's the one Mabel and Moss shared.
- Rhykin uses medical-grade 304 stainless steel for the bowl, which resists biofilm build-up, and after 90 days of weekly washes I couldn't spot a scratch
- There's a 3.2L for one cat and a 7L for homes with more cats or other pets. Both of mine drank from the 7L
- Listed sizes are 23.5 x 10cm for the 3.2L and 31.5 x 12.5cm for the 7L. Even the bigger one fitted beside our back door without anyone tripping on it
- Wired keeps the water flowing round the clock. Wireless starts when a motion sensor spots a cat and gets about 7 to 12 days from a charge
- It took under 2 minutes to set up. Mabel was drinking from it before the cardboard had gone out to the recycling
- Most weeks the steel bowl went through the dishwasher with the roasting pans and came out fine
- Selene's photo says the bowl is 304 food-grade stainless steel
- It comes apart into "3 simple stainless steel parts" for washing up
- The non-slip base kept it from shifting on the hallway floor, even when Moss came tearing past
- Selene says a charge lasts up to 30 days, or it can stay plugged in
- A 5-year warranty for "manufacturing defects and material issues under normal use" says Selene expects the build to last
- The Kitty Fountain stops at 4L, the size Selene's own guide gives multi-cat homes
Selene's Kitty Fountain is well made. The bowl is 304 food-grade steel, I liked the non-slip base, and the 3 steel parts come apart easily. FreshFlow's bowl is medical-grade 304 stainless steel, it runs on a HushDrive™ whisper-quiet motor, and you get a lifetime warranty on your fountain. Mine has two cats, and the Kitty Fountain stops at 4L where Rhykin's cat range goes up to 7L. The round goes to FreshFlow.
Noise and how each cat reacted
Moss is why this round exists. He's a 2-year-old rescue tabby who bolts from the vacuum and from anything else that hums, so a fountain that whined would have put him off for good. Across the 90 days I watched both cats meet each fountain for the first time, and I listened to both on quiet evenings.
- The HushDrive™ whisper-quiet motor meant Moss walked up to it on his own and was drinking from it in the first few days
- The 7L Wired runs 24/7. Late at night I had to stand right next to it to hear anything at all
- Bent over the bowl, I heard the water and nothing I'd call a motor
- It sounds like a soft trickle, not a pump, and jumpy Moss never backed off
- The 7L Wireless I had for two weeks sits silent until its motion sensor sees a cat, then the water starts
- Selene publishes a noise figure of 30 dB
- Mabel, who is wary of anything new, took to it in the hallway straight away
- On battery for the final two weeks it sounded the same as it had plugged in
- I don't own a sound meter, so the 30 dB is Selene's word and I took it as given
- From the couch with the TV on I couldn't pick out either fountain
Your cat decides this one, not the spec sheet. With HushDrive™ running, Moss, who bolts from anything that hums, treated FreshFlow like a normal bowl within days, and late at night I had to stand right next to the 7L to hear it at all. Selene's is quiet too, with a published 30 dB figure. For a nervous cat, I'd pick the HushDrive™ whisper-quiet motor. Round to FreshFlow.
Cleaning and maintenance
Each of these needs washing once a week. Across the 90 days I kept a note of every wash and every filter that went in.
- The 304 steel bowl can go in the dishwasher, and most weeks mine shared a cycle with the plates
- Rhykin only asks for a rinse and a wipe each week. Mine got done on Saturday mornings with the radio on
- A fresh TripleGuard™ filter is delivered every 28 days, so there's nothing to remember
- The medical-grade 304 steel resists biofilm build-up, so I never found a slimy ring at the waterline
- Swapping the filter took me a couple of minutes at the sink
- Setup after a wash is under 2 minutes, and refilling it takes up most of that
- The bowl is 304 food-grade steel and goes in the dishwasher
- Selene says a wash by hand takes under 5 minutes
- Its packs and plan assume two filters a month, so with two cats I changed it every two weeks: six times in 90 days
- Its standard filter comes with no published lab results on what it removes
- Selene's terms put a mandatory filter subscription on some fountains, its wireless one among them. The Kitty Fountain listing didn't need one
- Selene calls it "3 simple stainless steel parts", which is fair. It goes back together in under 2 minutes
FreshFlow edges this one. Both steel bowls went through the dishwasher, and Selene's three steel parts are as easy to wash as it says. The difference is the filter. FreshFlow's TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion filter is delivered fresh every 28 days and does more for the water. Selene's packs assume a change every two weeks with two cats, so you're at the sink more often for a filter that tells you less.
Cordless running and everyday drinking
Neither fountain has an app. So I watched how often I refilled, and gave each one two weeks away from the plug.
- A single fill of the 7L kept Mabel and Moss going for most of a week
- Mabel does most of her drinking in the kitchen, so that's where the FreshFlow has stayed
- The medical-grade 304 steel bowl resists biofilm build-up
- On the 7L Wireless, a motion sensor switches the flow on when a cat comes near, so it only runs when it's needed
- Rhykin rates the Wireless at about 7 to 12 days between charges, and the Wired model never needs charging at all
- The fresh, moving water kept both cats coming back through the day
- Selene says one charge lasts up to 30 days, depending on the mode and how much your cats use it
- It can also stay plugged in all the time, so it works next to a socket or well away from one
- I only had it on battery for the final two weeks, too short to test Selene's 30 days myself
- Selene says cats drink 2x more. It has no app, so that claim went unchecked in my house
- On battery it got through my whole two weeks without needing a charge
- With both of my cats on the 4L, it needed topping up sooner than the 7L
FreshFlow gives you the choice. The 7L Wired in my kitchen runs around the clock and never needs charging, and the Wireless starts on a motion sensor so it only runs when a cat walks up. One fill of the 7L lasted Mabel and Moss most of a week. Selene's battery lasts longer between charges, which helps if your cats drink somewhere with no outlet, and that's why the Selene now lives on our landing. For the main bowl in a two-cat home, I'd pick FreshFlow.
Warranty and returns
FreshFlow by Rhykin gives you a lifetime warranty on your fountain and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Selene offers five years of cover and a year to change your mind. Both come with small print.
- Lifetime warranty on your fountain
- 30-day money-back guarantee on top of lifetime cover
- Send it back within 30 days for a refund, whether your cats have used it or not
- Warranty claims go by email to support@rhykin.com
- Selene's warranty runs 5 years on "manufacturing defects and material issues under normal use"
- 365 days to claim a refund on a used fountain
- Subscription orders don't qualify for the 365 days. Buy the fountain on its own if the refund window matters
- Returns go to an address Selene gives you after approval, at your cost
FreshFlow takes this round. A lifetime warranty on your fountain outlasts Selene's 5 years, and you get a 30-day money-back guarantee whether your cats have used it or not. Selene's 365-day window is longer, but read the conditions before you count on it. Subscription orders are excluded, a return has to be in good condition in its original packaging with proof of purchase, and it ships back at your expense with no prepaid label. If you're buying a fountain to keep for years, lifetime cover is the stronger promise.
What your filter money actually buys
Both fountains need fresh filters, and with Mabel and Moss sharing one bowl all day, the filter does most of the work. So I looked at what's actually inside each one.
You save about $300 on filters in your first year.
Better filtration, and it costs you less. FreshFlow by Rhykin filters are $35 every 28 days, just $1.25 a day ($420 a year). Selene's filter subscription runs about $60 every 28 days, about $2.14 a day ($720 a year). That's about $300 back in your pocket in year one.
For less than a coffee a day, you get TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration, the most advanced filtration system on the market, with a fresh filter delivered every 28 days. It traps fur, debris, odor and impurities in multiple carbon-ion stages. Selene's standard mineral filter can't settle on a layer count or a change schedule, and it comes with no published lab results. You also pay less: $35 every 28 days against about $60 for Selene's subscription, so you save about $300 in year one.
