Why we ran this test
I looked at the PETLIBRO Dockstream 2 first. It has 4.9 stars from 222 reviews on petlibro.com, and the big draw is the app, which logs how much your cat drinks and how many times it comes back to the bowl. My vet had asked how much water Juno gets through in a day, and I couldn't give a number. A fountain that keeps count for me went on the shortlist fast.
The Dockstream 2 only comes in one size, 3L, and PETLIBRO's own notes say it's more suitable for single-cat households. I have two cats. So I also tested FreshFlow by Rhykin: TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration, a medical-grade 304 stainless steel bowl that goes in the dishwasher, and a 3.2L for single-cat homes or a 7L for multi-cat homes. It's also #1 Vet Recommended.
Days 1 to 45, the FreshFlow 7L Wired sat in the kitchen and the Dockstream 2 Plug-In in the hallway. Then they swapped. Each cordless version got two weeks. I logged every refill and filter change.

Filtration and water quality
Juno is long-haired and sheds all year, so I checked both bowls for fur most mornings and changed filters whenever each brand told me to.
- TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration is the most advanced filtration system on the market, and it kept the 7L bowl clear through Juno's worst shedding weeks
- Its multi-stage carbon-ion media traps fur, debris, odor and impurities before the water reaches the bowl
- A fresh TripleGuard™ filter is delivered every 28 days, so you never run on a tired filter
- Plain tap water was fine. Rhykin only suggests filtered water if yours is very hard, to slow mineral buildup
- The medical-grade 304 stainless steel bowl resists biofilm build-up, and it had no slimy film when I ran a finger around it
- Over the 90 days, Juno's fur never slowed the flow between filter changes
- A standard 4-layer filter: activated carbon, ion-exchange resin, non-woven fabric and a pre-filter sponge
- PETLIBRO's site says change it every 2 weeks. Both of its manuals say every week
- PETLIBRO's own filter graphic says weekly with 2+ pets, and each new filter soaks 5 minutes first
- No published lab results on what it actually removes
- The water looked clean as long as I kept up the weekly changes
- Every new filter has to soak for 5 minutes before it goes in
FreshFlow takes the filtration round. TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration is the most advanced filtration system on the market, and in my house it kept the 7L clear of Juno's fur through her worst shedding weeks, with a fresh filter delivered every 28 days. PETLIBRO's standard 4-layer filter does a reasonable job, but its own site says every 2 weeks while both manuals say weekly, and with two cats I went weekly, soaking each one first. If filtration is what you care about most, FreshFlow is the one to buy.
Build quality and materials
Both brands sell these as cat fountains, and side by side they're built for different households. The FreshFlow 7L is a wide medical-grade steel bowl Rhykin sizes for multi-cat homes. The Dockstream 2 is a compact 3L fountain that PETLIBRO calls more suitable for single-cat households.
- The whole bowl is medical-grade 304 stainless steel, which resists biofilm build-up, and 90 days of Pip pawing at the water left no scratches I could find
- Two sizes: 3.2L for single-cat homes, 7L for multi-cat or multi-pet homes. Juno and Pip shared the 7L
- The 3.2L measures 23.5 x 10cm (9.25 x 4in) and the 7L 31.5 x 12.5cm (12.5 x 5in). The 7L fit our kitchen corner fine
- Wired runs constant flow 24/7. Wireless needs no cord and starts on motion, about 7 to 12 days per charge
- Out of the box and running in under 2 minutes. Juno was drinking before I'd flattened the box
- The steel bowl is dishwasher safe, so most weeks it rode the bottom rack with the dinner plates
- The top water tray, where the cats actually drink, is stainless steel
- At 9.6 x 7.8 x 7.7 in, it tucked into the hallway out of the way
- Plug-In or Cordless, in white or black. PETLIBRO rates the Cordless at up to 30 days a charge with one pet
- A low-water shutoff stops the rotor when the tank runs dry
- PETLIBRO's warranty runs 24 months
- PETLIBRO names only the top tray as steel, and its own notes call it more suitable for a one-cat home
The Dockstream 2 is solidly made for its size, and for one cat it's a tidy little fountain. PETLIBRO's own notes say it's more suitable for single-cat households, though, and I have two. PETLIBRO names only the tray as steel. The FreshFlow bowl is medical-grade 304 steel all the way through, it runs on a HushDrive™ whisper-quiet motor, you get a lifetime warranty on your fountain, and Rhykin sizes the 7L for homes like mine. FreshFlow takes this round.
Noise and how the cats reacted
Pip is the reason this round exists. He's a 3-year-old rescue who hides under the bed when the blender starts, so a pump with a whine would have been a deal-breaker. Over the 90 days I watched each cat's first approach and listened for both fountains in a quiet house.
- The HushDrive™ whisper-quiet motor meant Pip, who bolts from the robot vacuum, walked up and drank from it on the first afternoon
- With the TV off at night I couldn't pick out the 7L Wired at all, and that model runs 24/7
- With my ear right over the bowl, all I heard was water trickling
- Juno found it on day one and was back at it every hour or so that first evening
- The Wireless model I tried for two weeks only starts the flow when its motion sensor spots a cat
- PETLIBRO quotes 23 dB, with no test conditions given
- A magnetic rotor in the tank is driven by a motor in the base, so no wires sit in the water
- With both cats drinking from it, I topped up the 3L tank every few days
- Pip paws at moving water before he drinks, and PETLIBRO's splash shield is a separate add-on
- That 23 dB edge didn't show up in my house. I couldn't hear either fountain from the couch
Your cat decides this one, not the spec sheet. With HushDrive™ running, Pip, who hides under the bed when the blender starts, drank from FreshFlow on the first afternoon, and at night I couldn't pick out the 7L Wired at all. The Dockstream 2 is quiet too, but Pip paws at moving water, and PETLIBRO's splash shield is an extra add-on. For a nervous cat, I'd pick the HushDrive™ whisper-quiet motor. Round to FreshFlow.
Cleaning and maintenance
Both fountains want attention every week, so for 90 days I counted the parts in the sink and the filters I bought.
- The steel bowl is dishwasher safe, and most weeks I just put it on the bottom rack
- Rhykin's routine is a rinse and a wipe once a week. I did mine on Sunday mornings while the coffee brewed
- A fresh TripleGuard™ filter is delivered every 28 days, so there's nothing to remember
- No app to set up, no Wi-Fi to pair, no reminders to manage
- The medical-grade 304 steel resists biofilm build-up, and three months in I still hadn't found slime at the waterline
- Back up and running in under 2 minutes after a wash, and most of that was filling it
- The app pings you when the filter is due and when it's time to clean
- Every new filter has to soak 5 minutes first
- With two cats, PETLIBRO's own advice is a fresh filter every week. That's 52 a year
- The manual says no dishwasher for any part, though PETLIBRO sells the tray as dishwasher-safe
- I hand-washed everything to be safe, and the motor base only got a wipe, since the manual says never to submerge it
- Ten parts in the manual's diagram. By the third wash I could rebuild it from memory
This round goes to FreshFlow. My weekly routine was a rinse and the steel bowl through the dishwasher, with a fresh TripleGuard™ filter delivered every 28 days. The Dockstream 2 meant a 10-part fountain washed by hand, with a motor base that only got a wipe, and with two cats a new filter every week, each one soaked for 5 minutes first.
Simple everyday use
The Dockstream 2 sends your pet's drinking log to your phone. FreshFlow keeps it simple: no app, no Wi-Fi, just fresh, filtered water your cat comes back to.
- The wired 7L keeps the water moving around the clock, and one fill lasted Juno and Pip most of a week
- TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration handled plain tap water, and the bowl never smelled off
- The medical-grade 304 stainless steel bowl resists biofilm build-up
- A hot dishwasher cycle most weeks reaches the exact surface the cats drink from
- Rhykin lists the 7L at 12.5 x 5 in, wide enough for Juno and Pip to drink side by side
- Nothing to pair, charge or update. Fill it, plug it in, and your cats do the rest
- Pairs with the PETLIBRO app over 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and the basic tracking comes free with the fountain
- Tracks one pet. In my house it logged Juno and Pip as a single, very thirsty cat
- Trend charts and goals cost extra through PETLIBRO's paid Care plan
- PETLIBRO lists ABS and stainless steel, and names only the top tray as steel
- Logs water intake, drinking sessions and average drinking time, with low-water alerts
- Holds 3L, and PETLIBRO's own notes call it better suited to single-cat homes. With two cats on it, every daily total on the app was really both of them
FreshFlow takes this one for a two-cat home. The Dockstream 2's app logs drinking for one pet, but in my house it counted Juno and Pip as a single, very thirsty cat, its trend charts sit behind a paid plan, and I stopped checking after the first month. FreshFlow needs no app at all. You get fresh, filtered water around the clock, a bowl wide enough for two, and nothing to pair or update. If you have one cat and really want the data, the Dockstream 2 does that job. For everyone else, simple wins.
Warranty and returns
FreshFlow by Rhykin gives you a lifetime warranty on your fountain and a 30-day money-back guarantee, used or not. PETLIBRO gives you 24 months and a narrower return policy.
- Lifetime warranty on your fountain
- 30-day money-back guarantee on top of lifetime cover
- Send it back within 30 days for a refund, whether your cat has used it or not
- Claims go to support@rhykin.com, answered within 3 business days
- A 24-month warranty, then you're on your own
- Batteries and filters are excluded
- Dishwasher damage is excluded if you ignore the manual's no-dishwasher rule
- Refunds within 30 days, PETLIBRO's site only, and assembled products are on its no-return list
FreshFlow takes this round. A lifetime warranty on your fountain outlasts PETLIBRO's 24 months by years, and you get a 30-day money-back guarantee whether your cat has used it or not. PETLIBRO's refunds apply to its own site only, and it lists assembled products as non-returnable, which is a problem if you plan to actually test the fountain. If you're buying a fountain to keep for years, lifetime cover is the stronger promise.
What your filter money actually buys
Both fountains need fresh filters, and with Juno and Pip sharing one bowl all day, the filter does most of the work. So I looked at what's actually inside each one.
For less than a coffee a day, you get TripleGuard™ Carbon-Ion Filtration, the most advanced filtration system on the market, with a fresh filter delivered every 28 days. It traps fur, debris, odor and impurities in multiple carbon-ion stages. The Dockstream 2's standard 4-layer filter wants changing every 2 weeks, or weekly with two cats, and each one soaks 5 minutes before it goes in. With FreshFlow, you know what your filter is doing, and you're at the sink far less often.
